Goodbye to March 2013

This month flew by. It started out on Koh Phangan for a PADI IDC and I've been at home for the rest of the month.

The weather was great this month, the first week saw an occasional shower and a bit of rain but after that it was blue sky galore and each day became warmer and warmer. It's been really hot indeed! A good month for sun seekers.

Beach vendor on Choengmon Beach selling food

Good food was had on Koh Phangan at Caffe del Moccha and on Samui at a couple of regular spots, like Juzzapizza in Fisherman's Village and Siripoca in Bang Po, two places that stand out.

It's also time to try to get as many signatures for stopping the oil drilling near Samui with this petition and yesterday saw the First Charity Samui Midnight Run in Chaweng, in which I came second in my age category.

A good month overall that came with a little private twist when we found out that my wife is expecting our third baby.

Now it's time to move on though and look forward to the April version of 2013.

First Charity Koh Samui Midnight Run, race night

Promptly at midnight the runners for the 5km and 10km runs as part of the Samui Midnight Run were sent on their way! My guesstimate was that around 600 runners gathered out of which maybe a 150 were running the race in both categories and the other 450 were there to enjoy the 5km fun run and dress up and have fun! A very good turn out for this first time event.

First Koh Samui Midnight Run, start and finish

Start and finish in front of the Reggae Pub

I participated in the 10km run and ended second in my age category in a time of 54'25.1 which is not really a great time for my standards but considering the time of the day and the still very humid conditions, not too bad.
This was my second Midnight Run that I participated in, a year and a half ago I ran the Bangkok Midnight Run.

First Koh Samui Midnight Run, before the start

My friend Stuart who ran the 5km and me before the run

The while event was well organized including the registration, except the finish was very chaotic with a big traffic jam/clog up in front of the finish line when I came in. I had to wriggle my way through cars, bikes and a few people on feet.
It was fun to run through Soi Reggae and Soi Green Mango though!

First Koh Samui Midnight Run, 2nd spot

2nd spot

It was a fun event although it's not easy to run at that time of the day! It's good to see this event on Samui's running schedule especially considering that the Samui marathon seems to have been cancelled and is off the Samui running agenda.

Stop the oil drilling petition

Danai Thongsin, a long term Thai resident on Koh Samui, a Nonthaburi native who has been working for almost a decade at a Samui hotel is asking the Ministry of Energy to suspend coastal offshore drilling around the island as well as near Angthong National Park, Koh Tao and Koh Phangan, as reported by me earlier this week here. He started an online petition via Change.org

Stop the Oil Rig!

You can help by signing the petition and Danai and the Save Samui, Phangan and Tao network will submit their signatures to the relevant agencies and companies next month.

Samui Midnight Run, registration

This afternoon it was time to pick up the race number and the T-shirt of the Samui Midnight Run. Mission was completed successfully and now the difficult choice comes, what to do next?

Samui Midnight Run, Registration at Reggae Pub

At the Reggae Pub this afternoon

Normally I'm vast asleep comes midnight, so do try to take a nap now or stay up all the time? I did a midnight run once before in Bangkok and I had the same problem! A nap seems like the right thing to do though.

Oil fields around Koh samui

Here's my 3.000th post on my Samui info blog and although that in itself is cause to celebrate and a   milestone, unfortunately the topic that I address this time around is one of great concern and might affect us in the future of our beloved Koh Samui.

It’s now confirmed by a representative of the Ministry of Energy that oil drill projects around the islands will begin their exploration process in April 2013. The nearest point from Samui's shore is less than 40 kms, only 36.7 kms from Koh Phangan and also less than 40 kms from Koh Tao.

According to the EIA report, which states that the areas that are in biggest danger are Bophud and Maret in Koh Samui and Baan Tai in Koh Phangan.

Oil fields around Koh Samui, march April 2103
On the picture we can see 4 areas for drilling, the lot B6/27 is PTT, the next lot named Salamander Energy is supposedly a Chevron daughter, which unfortunately has the worst reputation when it comes down to accidents and spills and there’s lot G6/48 by Pearl Oil and CEC (NuCoastal) also mingles in.

It is our final call after a more than 3 years fighting through legal channels via Administrative Court and National Human Rights Commission and demonstrations around the island. Please address this to as many people as you know  to help spreading words among friends.

Oil fields around Koh Samui, march April 2103 English version

The risk is out there and we all can help. Just think about what happened in the Gulf of Mexico not too long ago! If anything would happen with these rigs, the coast from Songkla all the way up to Pattaya would be devastated and Thailand’s tourism industry would be in tatters.

Food on Wheels; Kuaitiao soup, an all time fave

Kuaitiao soup ก๋วยเตี๋ยว is indeed an all time fave of many Thai people and comes in many different flavors and with a variety of different noodles.
It can be found pretty much all day long although during the evening a lot of kauitiao stalls seem to open up for a simple yet delicious Thai dinner option. Oh, and it's cheap!

Kuaitiao soup cart

The kuaitiao soup cart

A bowl of kuaitiao goes for about 25 to 30 Thai Baht. It's also easy to order, just walk up and point at the noodles that you would like to have, the rest will sort itself out!

Kuaitiao soup cart close up

A close up to some of the ingredients

Personally I prefer the yellow noodles with a very thin powder layer on them. You can also get rice noodles, thick and wide noodles, green noodles, plenty of options to try out a variety of dishes all based on the same theme.

Kuaitiao soup cart in action

The making of........

This kauitiao cart came to the back of our house to serve some people who were working in our garden. It was just hauled in from the road whilst it was passing by. Thailand in all it's convenience!

This cart is the classic setup, motorbike with side car. It's ingenious how many different utensils are build into the basic frame, like gas tanks, big soup tanks and more smaller details. Fascinating and sometimes worthwhile checking out.

Kuaitiao soup car on Koh Phangan at the Phao Chao temple party

On my recent visit to Koh Phangan I bumped into a bigger version on the same theme, a pick up car converted into a kauitiao field kitchen! Busy as always and a fave by both Thais and Westerners alike.

A closer look into the kitchen

A few years ago I already wrote about a similar set up on Koh Samui. This mobile soup kitchen on Koh Phangan also had plenty of seating arrangements so people can sit down and enjoy their kauitioa.

Temple party Bophud

Last weekend saw the end of a week long temple party at the Bophud temple. It's that time of the year again and the various temples around the island will have temple parties, so plenty of time to go and visit one.

Interesting light displays can be seen at various locations

The parties offer lots of things for sale, cheap clothing, (junk) food and plenty of other attractions like games for young and old.

This is build from sand and for twenty Baht you could buy a bucket with sand and make your own small sand hill and stick a yellow flag in your hill. This habit comes from the 'old' days when you were supposed to bring something to the temple and on Samui many people brought sand, so things could be build.

A great sample of Thai (junk) temple food, small and round sausages that go by the name of Sai Klog

This small wheel was one of the rides and games to choose from

It was crowded and busy

Our daughter danced with other classmates and many parents came to see their offspring from various age groups. It was a fun evening out and especially if you have never visited such a temple party, it's well worth the visit for it's smells, views, tastes and the experience!

Koh Samui, Thailand daily weather update; 7th March, 2013

Today's weather;

During this last day of the current PADI IDC on Koh Phangan we have the sun back on Koh Samui and Koh Phangan although there's still plenty of cloud cover. Current temp at 7am is 28C

Thong Sala, Koh Phangan

The Royal Thai Navy vessel 713 sitting on land in Thong Sala on Koh Phangan. Not sure if it's meant to be a museum or if it's waiting to be sunk in a controlled way

Yesterday saw a promising start of the day with some sunshine but before noon it already rained and that held on till very late during the evening, varying in strength. Max temp reached 28.6C

The forecast still predicts clear skies and sunny days for the next 7 days, let's hope it for delivery!

Wednesday 6 March 2013

Koh Samui, Thailand daily weather update; 6th March, 2013

Today's weather;

This morning it's still cloudy but the clouds are lighter of color compared to yesterday and the sun is trying hard to break through over Koh Samui and on Koh Phangan. Current temp at 7am is 28C

For two days in a row I have been visiting the Caffe Della Moca in Chaloklum, the most Northern part of Koh Phangan and the food was as usual outstanding and well worth the drive over the hills on dark and mostly unlit roads! This is one of the best Italian restaurants I know in Thailand!

Phao Chao temple party, Koh Phangan

The Phao Chao temple party on Koh Phangan finished two days ago already but here's one more picture of the Temple grounds

Yesterday it rained almost all day long except during the evening when it dried up again. Max temp reached 28,3C

The forecast looks good, a bit of wind still during this morning but sunny days should be heading our ways for the next week.

Koh Samui, Thailand daily weather update; 5th March, 2013

Today's weather;

It's cloudy over Koh Samui and just right now some very dark clouds move over Koh Phangan although it's still dry. Current temp at 7am is 24.8C and at 7.20 we have the first shower of the day.

Some important news from the Nathon City Facebook page; The new undersea transmission line from mainland to Maenam substation was already tested, and ready to officially operate on 15 March.
Now let's cross our fingers that this will run smoothly!

The PADI IDC on Koh Phangan reached the half way mark, just a few more days before the candidates' exams start.

Monday 4 March 2013

Welcome to March 2013

March is usually a very good month if you want to soak up some sun and is excellent if you want to avoid the busy seasons.
The last 6 recorded years on my blog show excellent conditions except in 2011 when towards the end of March and during early April we had some extremely out of season flooding on the island.

Chaweng early morning

Chaweng early morning, a few months ago, where the Central shopping mall will be in a year or two. The view has already changed drastically

The start of the month is excellent and it's all leading up to the heat of April! Enjoy this month if you find yourself on Samui and keep checking my posts!
